Book Week 2021!

It’s Book Week this week!

The theme for this year is “Old worlds, new worlds, other worlds”.

Each year, schools and public libraries across Australia spend a week celebrating books, Australian authors and illustrators.

In 1946 the CBCA started the annual book awards for children’s books that are well written and illustrated. These awards are now the most influential and highly respected in Australia.

For more information, visit the Book Week 2021 website.

Today you can listen to these books that have been shortlisted for book of the year and complete one or more fun activities.

Capacity

I am learning to make a container from recycled materials that will hold exactly 10 of the same items.

I know I can do it when I can make a container from recycled materials that will hold exactly 10 of the same items.

Capacity is not just about how much water something can hold.

It can also include filling an object with other materials including money, cookies, pasta and toys, just to name a few.

Today you will be exploring this further by having a go at constructing your own container to hold the objects.

Independent Task

Make a container from recycled materials (examples: cardboard, Lego, play dough, plasticine, plastic or anything else that you can think of) that will comfortably hold 10 of the same items (examples: cotton wool balls, pasta or Lego blocks).

In order for it to comfortably hold the chosen items it must be full once you reach 10.

If once you have made the container there is still a lot of room left you might adjust the size of the container or choose another item that might fit 10.

You can also try these DIY science experiments at home, or visit the STEM blog for more fun activities.

Activity 1: Lava Lamp

Activity 2: Beautiful Bath Bombs

Activity 3: Pop & Catch

Activity 4: Fancy going on a virtual excursion? Click here for details.

Activity 5: Don’t forget to complete your Art, Mandarin, Music and P.E. tasks.

Friday 13th August – Fantastic Friday

Activity 1 – Check Out These Indoor Obstacle Courses!

Activity 2 – Create Your Own Indoor Obstacle Course!

Now it’s your turn! See if you can create an indoor obstacle course that you can complete with your family. Draw inspiration from the videos above, or come up with your own amazing ideas.

Once you have built the course, test it out to see if it works. Then invite your family members to have a go. Use a stopwatch to see who can complete the course in the fastest time.

If you like, you can even send your teacher some photos or a video of you doing your obstacle course. Good luck, and be sure to put everything away when you’ve finished with it!

Activity 3 – Specialist Classes and STEM

Don’t forget to complete your Art, Mandarin, Music and P.E. tasks. You can also visit the STEM blog for more fun activities, or do Reading Eggs and Mathletics.

Monday 26th July – Tuesday 27th July – STEM

The Apple-Toothpick Challenge!

I am learning to use STEM strategies to build an apple-toothpick tower.

I know I can do it when I have used my STEM knowledge to build a strong tower using apples and toothpicks

To complete this challenge, you will need some apples and toothpicks. Make sure to be careful with the toothpicks because they are sharp!

Independent Task

Your task today is to create a strong and tall tower using only toothpicks and apple pieces!

What to do:

  1. To prepare, ask a responsible adult to cut the apples in half and flip them upside down.  This makes it easy to slice the apples into relatively flat pieces and cut them into smaller building blocks. (see picture below).

2. Use the apple pieces and the toothpicks to construct a strong and stable tower. See how tall and strong you can make it. You may have to try a few different designs to find the best one!

3. Once you are happy with your design, take a photo so that you can share it with your class and your teacher.

4. You might even like to challenge a family member to see who can build the strongest tower!
