The Apple-Toothpick Challenge!

I am learning to use STEM strategies to build an apple-toothpick tower.

I know I can do it when I have used my STEM knowledge to build a strong tower using apples and toothpicks

To complete this challenge, you will need some apples and toothpicks. Make sure to be careful with the toothpicks because they are sharp!

Independent Task

Your task today is to create a strong and tall tower using only toothpicks and apple pieces!

What to do:

  1. To prepare, ask a responsible adult to cut the apples in half and flip them upside down.  This makes it easy to slice the apples into relatively flat pieces and cut them into smaller building blocks. (see picture below).

2. Use the apple pieces and the toothpicks to construct a strong and stable tower. See how tall and strong you can make it. You may have to try a few different designs to find the best one!

3. Once you are happy with your design, take a photo so that you can share it with your class and your teacher.

4. You might even like to challenge a family member to see who can build the strongest tower!

Using a Picture Prompt to Help with Writing Ideas

I am learning to use a picture prompt to assist with writing ideas.

I know I can do it when I can write some sentences using the picture to generate some ideas.

Independent Task

Look at the picture above. Write some interesting sentences to describe the picture.

Remember to use interesting adjectives and include capital letters and full stops.

Some example sentences may include:

A warm summer breeze.

Grainy sand between my toes.

The sun is heating my skin.

Have a go at writing at least 5 sentences in your Journal book.
