Wednesday 25th August – Maths

Holds Less, Holds More.

I am learning to compare objects and say which holds more and which holds less.

I know I can do it when I can compare objects and say which holds more and which holds less.

We now know that some objects can hold more or less than others.

Having this understanding helps prepare us to plan things better. For example, if you need to put all of your Lego into a box, you can estimate which box is most likely to fit all of your Lego pieces.

Independent Task

First, draw or write 5 objects that would hold LESS than a bath.

Then, draw or write 5 objects that would hold MORE than a coffee mug.

You may like to share two items you have drawn during Thursday’s Webex meeting.

Tuesday 24th August – Literacy

Comparing “New Worlds” to “Other Worlds”.

I am learning to compare texts I read or hear read to me.

I know I can do it when I am able to identify the similarities and differences in the texts I encounter.

Continuing with the theme of Book Week, today you are going listen to two different stories.

One is about the Book Week theme of “New Worlds” (no longer in the olden days and more about how things are today).

The other is about “Other Worlds” (fantasy and make believe).

New Worlds

Other Worlds

Independent Task

Now that you have listened to or watched both stories, you are going to COMPARE the two.

I’m Australian Too is a New World story.

It is about the Australia that we live in today and the different people that choose to come and live here.

Where the Wild Things Are is about “Other Worlds“, a fantasy/make believe world.

What do these stories have in common?

What is different about them?

Draw a Venn diagram that looks like the one below to compare the similarities and differences with these two texts.

Use this to write/draw the similarities and differences that you noticed between the two books. Brainstorm as many ideas as you can!

Monday 23rd August – Literacy

Writing a Book Review About a Book Set Long Ago.

I am learning to write a book review about a book set in the “Old World.”

I know I can do it when I can produce a book report on a book set in the “Old World.”

This week it is book week!

The theme of this years Book Week is “Old Worlds, New Worlds and Other Worlds”.

Each day you will look at a different book!

Listen to the book Little Lon being read to you below. Maybe you want to watch and listen to it a few times.

Independent Task

Today, you are going to be writing a review about the book ‘Little Lon‘. This book is about the “Old World” in Melbourne many years ago.

Use the attachment below to answer questions about the book. If you do not have a printer at home, copy the questions into your workbook or onto a separate piece of paper.

Remember to rule margins, date and label your work.

Monday 16th August – Maths

Fractions – Whole and Half

I am learning to understand what a whole is and what a whole looks like.

I know I can do it when I can understand and draw whole objects.

This week we are going to look at fractions, but before we do that, it is important to talk about what we mean by a whole.

A whole means one entire thing – Something complete.

Independent Task

Think about the following statements:

A whole cake

A whole banana

A whole class

A whole song

A whole bag of lollies

A whole pizza

What do these statements mean? Discuss.

Your task is to draw these objects as a whole.

Thursday 12th August – Maths

Solving Simple Subtraction Problems Using a Number Line.

I am learning to solve simple subtraction problems by counting back on a number line.

I know I can do it when I can using the counting back strategy on a number line to solve subtraction problems.

Yesterday we used the counting back strategy to solve subtraction problems. You can also use the counting back strategy with the help of a number line to solve subtraction problems.

To access some number lines, download the file below. ↓↓↓

Watch the video below if you’re unsure how to use a number line to solve a subtraction problem.

Independent Task

Using a number line, solve the following 15 subtraction task cards. You will need to download the task cards below. ↓↓↓

Challenge

Can you solve the cards in your head without using a number line or counting on your fingers?

If you can, share the strategy that you are using with a family member.

Print and cut the cards up or write them on paper and cut them up. Place the cards face down and flip to reveal the sum. See how quickly you can solve each problem.

You could even add to the cards by using these sums-

27-10 =

26-5 =

28-15 =

22-16 =

21- 9 =

Thursday 12th August – Literacy

Writing Using a Picture Prompt

I am learning to apply my knowledge of nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs to create an interesting writing piece based on a picture prompt.

I know I can do it when I can create an interesting writing piece about a picture using verbs, adjectives, nouns and adverbs.

Today we are going to create an interesting piece of writing based on the picture above.

Independent Task

Using the knowledge you have gathered this week about nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs, use the picture above to create a piece of writing.

It can be a narrative (story), description, recount (of a real event) or any other idea that you can come up with.

Remember to use full-stops, capital letters, neat handwriting and interesting word choices.

Think about including lots of adjectives and adverbs to make your writing really interesting and exciting!

Ask a grown-up to read your work when you think you are finished.

Wednesday 11th August – Literacy

Nouns, Verbs and Adverbs

I am learning to use and identify nouns, verbs and adverbs in sentences.

I know I can do it when I can use and identify nouns, verbs and adverbs and use them in sentences.

Today we are going to be working with nouns, verbs and adverbs. To remind yourself of the differences between these types of words, read below.

Nouns – A person, place or thing. For example: Mr. Lee, Birralee, table.

Verbs – A doing word. For example: teaching, running, talking.

Adverbs – Usually used to describe how we are doing something. For example: teaching loudly, running quickly, talking softly.

Independent Task

Make three columns a piece of paper. Label one nouns, one verbs and one adverbs.

Brainstorm nouns then adjectives then adverbs in each column, like this:

NOUNSVERBSADVERBS
Cat, Dog, Mum, Chair, Mr. Ryan.Jump, Swim, Catch, Paint, Hug.Quietly, Gracefully, Carefully, Loudly, Enthusiastically.

List as many as you can.

Mix and match to make at least 5 silly sentences.

Draw a picture for each sentence.

Adjusting This Task For You!

If you would like to challenge yourself, try to add at least one adjective to each of your sentences as well!

Wednesday 11th August – Maths

Subtraction Using the Counting Back Strategy

I am learning to use the counting back strategy to solve subtraction problems.

I know I can do it when I am counting back from the biggest number in a subtraction problem.

This week we are looking at solving subtraction problems, focusing on counting back from the largest number. Learning to do this allows us to subtract from a collection of objects much quicker.

Watch this video to learn more: ↓↓↓

Independent Task

To complete today’s task, you will need some playing cards or two dice. If you don’t have any, follow this link for some online dice.

Using cards:

  • Remove all of the picture cards and the 10s from your deck so that you only have Aces through to 9s.
  • Choose two cards from your deck (eg. 3, 4).
  • starting from the biggest number, use the counting back strategy to work out what you would have left if you subtracted the smallest number from the largest number (4-3=1).
  • On a piece of paper, write down the subtraction problem that you have solved.

Using dice:

  • Roll two dice (10 sided if you have them)
  • starting from the biggest number, use the counting back strategy to work out what you would have left if you subtracted the smaller number on the dice from the largest number on the dice (4-3=1).
  • On a piece of paper, write down the subtraction problem that you have solved.

Repeat this process at least 5 times.

Adjusting This Task For You!

If you wish to challenge yourself, you could try to use mental strategies to subtract 2-digit numbers.
