What Do Plants Need To Grow?

I am learning to understand the different things that plants need to be able to grow and live.

I know I can do it when I know that plants need sunlight, soil/nutrients, water, air/oxygen and space to be able to grow.

Last week we looked at the different parts of a plant. This week, we are going to learn about the different things that most plants need to be able to grow and survive.

Most plants need 5 things to be able to grow. These 5 things are:

Water – Like humans, plants need water to be able to survive.

Air – Plants also need air to be able to breathe and survive.

Soil – Plants collect nutrients from the soil through their roots. This is like their food.

Sunlight – Most plants need sunlight to be able to develop and grow.

Space – Plants need room around them so that they can spread their branches and roots.

Independent Task

Now that you know what plants need to survive, your task this week is to search for some healthy and unhealthy plants in a park, your backyard, or your neighbourhood.

You will need to try to identify why those plants are healthy or unhealthy.

If the plant is unhealthy, what is it missing? Does it have enough sunlight? Is it living in healthy soil? Is it being watered often? Is there enough space for it to grow? Is it getting enough air?

Monday 6th September – Maths

Who am I?

I am learning to write descriptive statements to describe an Australian coin.

I know I can do it when I can write descriptive statements to describe an Australian coin.

Last week we were learning about Australian coins.

We learnt about how each coin is different, their sizes/shapes, what they are made of and the figures/animals that are on them.

Today you are going to solve a mystery by decoding sentences describing Australian coins.

Watch this video to refresh your memory about the Australian coins before completing your tasks.

Independent Task

Download the template below or write the questions into your workbook.

Read the clues and answer to solve the ‘Who am I?’ questions.

Once you have completed the questions, you are going to write your own descriptive sentences to describe an Australian coin.

Write 2 sentences that describe the 5c coin and $1 coin.

Think about the features that make these two coins different to all the other Australian coins and what makes them special.

Examples: shape, value, colour, picture.

Carefully select verbs and adjectives to support your writing.

I know I can do it when I can identify and discuss persuasive text types.

This week we are going to be learning about persuasive texts.

We use persuasive texts when we are trying to convince people to agree with our opinions, thoughts or beliefs.

Independent Task

Watch/listen to the video below for the story ‘Hey, Little Ant’. This story is an example of a persuasive text.

At the end of ‘Hey Little Ant’ the story asks you what you think the boy should do.

Write your response to this question and include your reasons as to why you think this. This response should be 3-4 sentences at least.

Talk with a grown up about how you know this book is an example of a persuasive text.
