Writing a Story (Narrative)

I am learning to write a narrative that makes sense.

I know I can do it when I write a narrative that makes sense.

We have written a lot of stories this year using a picture prompt and story starter in Grade One. Today, you are going to use some of your experiences at the park over the holidays to help you with some ideas for another story!

Independent Task

Today we would like you to write a story using the following picture prompt and/or story starter.

I was playing at the park when suddenly…

Continue this story from the sentence starter above.

Think about these things:

  • Do you have a setting?
  • Do you have characters?
  • Is there a problem?
  • How is the problem solved?
  • Do you have full stops and capital letters?
  • Does your writing make sense?

Maybe you can share your story in your class meeting in the morning!

Writing Using a Picture Prompt

I am learning to apply my knowledge of nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs to create an interesting writing piece based on a picture prompt.

I know I can do it when I can create an interesting writing piece about a picture using verbs, adjectives, nouns and adverbs.

Today we are going to create an interesting piece of writing based on the picture above.

Independent Task

Using the knowledge you have gathered this week about nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs, use the picture above to create a piece of writing.

It can be a narrative (story), description, recount (of a real event) or any other idea that you can come up with.

Remember to use full-stops, capital letters, neat handwriting and interesting word choices.

Think about including lots of adjectives and adverbs to make your writing really interesting and exciting!

Ask a grown-up to read your work when you think you are finished.

Using a Picture Prompt to Write a Story

I am learning to use a picture prompt to help generate story ideas.

I know I can do it when I can write a story based on a picture prompt.

Yesterday, your task was to think of some interesting sentences to describe the picture above. Those sentences and ideas will help you with today’s learning.

Independent Task

Using the picture prompt as a starting point, your task today is to write a story.

You could use the whole picture as an idea OR just part of the picture that you can see, for example the balloons, the beach or the girl.

Don’t forget to include:

  • A setting – where the story takes place.
  • Characters – who the story is about.
  • A problem – What goes wrong for your characters?
  • A solution – How is the problem solved?

Using a Picture Prompt to Help with Writing Ideas

I am learning to use a picture prompt to assist with writing ideas.

I know I can do it when I can write some sentences using the picture to generate some ideas.

Independent Task

Look at the picture above. Write some interesting sentences to describe the picture.

Remember to use interesting adjectives and include capital letters and full stops.

Some example sentences may include:

A warm summer breeze.

Grainy sand between my toes.
