Thursday 9th September – Maths

Shop and Make

I am learning about different Australian coin values to purchase from my shop.

I know I can do it when I can show different Australian coin values to purchase an item from my shop.

Today you will be using everything you have learnt about Australian coins this week to buy some items at your shop. 

Independent Task

Using items from around your house, create a shop with 5 items to sell.

Example: $2 cornflakes, 50c Ooshies, $1 book.

Each item must have a price tag with the value of 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 or $2.

Draw a picture of your 5 items and label the amount next to each.

You will be ‘buying’ each of your 5 items. Explore at least two different ways you can make the total amount to purchase that item.

Show these next to your shopping item by drawing, writing or taking a photo.

For example:

The total of this item is $2, I could purchase this item using two $1 coins or four 50c coins.

Persuasive Poster

I am learning to design and create a poster that is intended to persuade an audience.

I know I can do it when I can use the strategies, I have learned to create a persuasive poster.

This week we have been learning about persuasive texts. We learnt that advertisements can be used to convince you to buy or do something. Today you are going to create your own advertisement!

Independent Task

Design a poster that will convince people to buy or do something.

Maybe you want to convince people to buy your favourite sweet, snack or toy.

Perhaps it is wanting to convince people to do things like recycle, wear a helmet on their bike or scooter or perhaps you’d like them to come to your birthday party!

Remember to:

  • Use persuasive words to convince people (use your word list from Tuesday).
  • Use bright and bold colours to catch people’s attention.

Your poster might look something like this:

What Do Plants Need To Grow?

I am learning to understand the different things that plants need to be able to grow and live.

I know I can do it when I know that plants need sunlight, soil/nutrients, water, air/oxygen and space to be able to grow.

Last week we looked at the different parts of a plant. This week, we are going to learn about the different things that most plants need to be able to grow and survive.

Most plants need 5 things to be able to grow. These 5 things are:

Water – Like humans, plants need water to be able to survive.

Air – Plants also need air to be able to breathe and survive.

Soil – Plants collect nutrients from the soil through their roots. This is like their food.

Sunlight – Most plants need sunlight to be able to develop and grow.

Space – Plants need room around them so that they can spread their branches and roots.

Independent Task

Now that you know what plants need to survive, your task this week is to search for some healthy and unhealthy plants in a park, your backyard, or your neighbourhood.

You will need to try to identify why those plants are healthy or unhealthy.

If the plant is unhealthy, what is it missing? Does it have enough sunlight? Is it living in healthy soil? Is it being watered often? Is there enough space for it to grow? Is it getting enough air?
