Counting Backwards From a Non-Zero Starting Point

I am learning to count backwards starting from ANY number.

I know I can do it when I am able to count backwards from a non-zero starting point.

Yesterday we practised count forwards from numbers other than zero, today we are going to practise counting backwards.

You may wish to use the 100s chart that you used yesterday.

The online version can be found here.

OR you can download this file below. ↓↓↓

Independent Task

Like yesterday, you will be using playing cards or dice to find 2-digit numbers. If you do not have playing cards or dice, you can find some virtual dice here.

Remember – If you are using playing cards, you will need to remove the Jacks, Queens, Kings, Jokers and 10s.

Roll 2 dice or pick two playing cards from your deck to make a 2-digit number (for example 43). In your Maths book, write down the previous 8 numbers (for example 42, 41, 40, 39…).

Repeat this with at least 5 different numbers.

Adjusting This Task For You!

If you are finding this too tricky, try only using numbers less than 30.

If you want to challenge yourself, you could start with 3-digit or 4-digit numbers.

Using a Picture Prompt to Write a Story

I am learning to use a picture prompt to help generate story ideas.

I know I can do it when I can write a story based on a picture prompt.

Yesterday, your task was to think of some interesting sentences to describe the picture above. Those sentences and ideas will help you with today’s learning.

Independent Task

Using the picture prompt as a starting point, your task today is to write a story.

You could use the whole picture as an idea OR just part of the picture that you can see, for example the balloons, the beach or the girl.

Don’t forget to include:

  • A setting – where the story takes place.
  • Characters – who the story is about.
  • A problem – What goes wrong for your characters?
  • A solution – How is the problem solved?

Monday 26th July – Tuesday 27th July – STEM

The Apple-Toothpick Challenge!

I am learning to use STEM strategies to build an apple-toothpick tower.

I know I can do it when I have used my STEM knowledge to build a strong tower using apples and toothpicks

To complete this challenge, you will need some apples and toothpicks. Make sure to be careful with the toothpicks because they are sharp!

Independent Task

Your task today is to create a strong and tall tower using only toothpicks and apple pieces!

What to do:

  1. To prepare, ask a responsible adult to cut the apples in half and flip them upside down.  This makes it easy to slice the apples into relatively flat pieces and cut them into smaller building blocks. (see picture below).

2. Use the apple pieces and the toothpicks to construct a strong and stable tower. See how tall and strong you can make it. You may have to try a few different designs to find the best one!

3. Once you are happy with your design, take a photo so that you can share it with your class and your teacher.

4. You might even like to challenge a family member to see who can build the strongest tower!
